After a lifetime as a 4-H member, alumni, volunteer, and parent, I was hired as an EPA for the Curry County 4-H Program. I have always believed community groups and programs must work together to provide education and opportunities for youth and adults. Two years ago I inadvertently became the team leader for the Livestock Evacuations during the Chetco Bar Fire. I realized quickly that a large percentage of the population is not prepared for any type of disaster. I starting taking courses (CERT, Technical Large Animal Rescue Course, etc) to increase my knowledge and skills. I was offered the opportunity to become a My PI Oregon instructor and provide education to Curry County youth. I make it a point to ensure that the events and courses I lead are FUN as well as educational because if I am not enjoying myself, I can’t learn. I am now guiding the teens in providing Information to their communities on how to be more prepared. I know that we will never be able to guarantee 100% of the population in Curry County, but by providing the opportunity to learn about it, I can be assured that the impact of a disaster will be lessened.
