Religious and Cultural Literacy and Competency in Disasters: 2-Day Workshop

September 20, 2022 - September 21, 2022

The Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) is excited to present a great opportunity to learn from our colleagues trained in the FEMA Curriculum “Religious and Cultural Literacy and Competency in Disasters.”  This two-day face-to-face training is on September 20 and 21 at the Illini Center in Downtown Chicago. (Flyer Attached) This training is free to attend, but registration is required.  Lunch will be provided on both days.

A hotel block is available at the Club Quarters Hotel, located at 111 W Adams Street (and just an 8-minute walk from the nearby Illini Center). The nightly room rate is $169 per night plus taxes. The room block will open on July 1. Instructions on booking your room will be emailed to registered attendees once available.

This is a wonderful opportunity to expand our DEI efforts in disaster education, and gain valuable insights into how best to serve stakeholders.  Whether you work in urban or rural areas, this training will provide an excellent discussion and insight into Religious and Cultural Competency in Disaster Programming from practitioners.

DISCUSSION & INSIGHTS

o Explain why we engage religious and cultural communities
o Define the meaning of religious and cultural literacy and competency in disaster management
o Describe how religious and cultural language differ from government culture and language
o Identify the skills needed to competently engage religious and cultural leaders/groups
