Biography
Sonja Thomas holds a PhD in Structural Entomology from the University of Georgia and a Master of Science in Soybean Entomology from the University of Kentucky. She has extensive experience working with the United States Department of Agriculture, the National Park Service, and the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, where she served as an Agriculture and Natural Resources County Extension Agent.
Dr. Thomas has conducted research in Integrated Pest Management, including the development of an IPM plan for the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in Atlanta. Her work in structural entomology includes the review of more than 2,000 pesticide use records from Georgia public schools to identify training needs for industry professionals and regulatory personnel.
In her current role as State Coordinator of Pesticide Safety Education for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Dr. Thomas is responsible for developing and evaluating statewide educational programs focused on commercial and private pesticide applicator training, safe pesticide use, and regulatory compliance. She serves as the state coordinator for the Home Horticulture Team, serves on multiple professional boards and is the current Treasurer of the American Association of Pesticide Safety Educators.
She resides in Auburn, Alabama, with her daughter and their dog, Rocky.
