Susan Lovelace joined the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium in May 2014. As the Consortium’s Assistant Director for Development and Extension, Susan shepherds multi-disciplinary teams conducting research into vexing coastal issues and identifies upcoming challenges and opportunities for the Consortium and our coast. Susan coordinates the Consortium’s vibrant extension team whose portfolios include climate planning and adaption, community resilience, nature-based tourism, natural asset planning, environmental quality and living marine resources. Prior to joining the Consortium, Susan served as a social scientist and manager of the Human Dimensions Research Program at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Hollings Marine Laboratory. She has degrees in zoology from N.C. State University, science education from East Carolina University, and a Ph.D. in coastal resource management from East Carolina University in 2008. She conducted her dissertation research and writing in a sociology department. Susan also teaches in the Masters of Environmental and Sustainability Studies Program at the College of Charleston, a passion she has enjoyed since 2009.
