NIFA Funding Opportunities: Spring 2023

March 22, 2023/in Uncategorized

Food and Agriculture Defense Initiative Extension Disaster Education Network (FADI-EDEN) program

The last time this funding opportunity was open was in FY 2018. The goal of the FADI-EDEN program is to maximize the resilience of the U.S. food and agriculture sector to biosecurity risks, extreme weather events and disasters, cyber threats, and other shocks. Historically, a strength of the FADI-EDEN program has been its ties to the Extension Disaster Education Network, which is a national, collaborative network of extension professionals who are dedicated to improved all-hazards management of domestic disasters. The FADI-EDEN program will fund one Extension project that will address its priorities. Important details:

  1. RFA and applicant resources are available at: https://www.nifa.usda.gov/grants/funding-opportunities/food-agriculture-defense-initiative-extension-disaster-education-0
  2. Letter of Intent (LOI) deadline: March 23, 2023, at 5:00 pm ET (strongly recommended, not required)
  3. Application deadline: May 11, 2023, at 5:00 pm ET

Smith-Lever Special Needs Competitive Grant Program

Within the states and territories, the Cooperative Extension System has repeatedly served as the trusted community organization that has helped to enable families, communities, and businesses to successfully prepare for, respond to and cope with disaster losses and critical incidents. NIFA intends to fund Special Needs projects to implement applied scientific programs that serve public needs in preparation for, during and after local or regional emergency situations. Important details:

  1. RFA and applicant resources are available at: https://www.nifa.usda.gov/grants/funding-opportunities/smith-lever-special-needs-competitive-grants-program
  2. Application deadline: April 13, 2023, at 5:00 pm ET
  3. Eligibility: Applications may be submitted with the approval of Extension Directors of 1862 Land-grant Institutions in the 50 states, American Samoa, Guam, Micronesia, Northern Marianas, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands

AFRI A1712/Rapid Response to Extreme Weather Events Across Food and Agricultural Systems

Launched in FY 2022, this priority area seeks applications that focus on critical and urgent solutions in rapid response to extreme weather and disaster impacts on the nation’s food and agricultural systems and that clearly describe short-term deliverables (within 3 months of award receipt), including a plan for their adoption/use. The A1712 program priority area encourages projects to have well-developed extension and/or outreach activities. In project narratives and other application materials, applicants must be able to provide a clear, strategic approach to reaching end users. Important details:

  1. RFA and applicant resources available at: https://www.nifa.usda.gov/grants/programs/agriculture-food-research-initiative-afri/afri-request-applications
    1. This program is listed in the AFRI Foundational and Applied Science RFA, information begins on page 105 (subject to change)
  2. Application deadline: Must be submitted within 30 calendar days after an extreme weather event or disaster
    1. NOTE: There is an error in the RFA that will be revised; Letters of Intent are no longer needed for this program
  3. Live FAQ Session: Information and to register for quarterly applicant FAQ sessions are listed on the NIFA events page. Check back for summer and fall dates.
