New EDEN Ambassador Program
Do you have questions about being an EDEN member? You may be wondering, what is a POC? Who are the member institutions? How do I become a delegate? Which committee should you join? Would I need to learn a different language to participate? These are common questions, and we want to make the process of learning about EDEN a bit easier. Therefore, we are currently developing an EDEN Ambassadors Program to offer advice and assistance. If you have joined EDEN since our 2019 Annual Meeting, then you are invited to join the new Ambassadors Program!
New members will be paired with a more tenured member of EDEN, who has a similar area of appointment or interests, so they can help you navigate this wonderful world of EDEN. You will meet with them for approximately an hour each month leading up to the 2022 Annual Meeting in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Hopefully, you will develop a better understanding of EDEN prior to the 2022 Annual Meeting, so you can easily network with your fellow EDEN members.

NIFA Invests Nearly $463K to Support Education Outreach for Disaster Preparedness
Within the U.S. and its territories, the Cooperative Extension System has repeatedly served as the trusted community organization that has helped to enable families, communities, and businesses to successfully prepare for, respond to, and cope with disaster losses and critical incidents. Funded Smith-lever Special Needs Competitive Grants Program projects implement educational outreach initiatives for disaster preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery (pre-disasters, during, and post-disasters). In FY 2021, NIFA invested nearly $463,000 to support six projects at five 1862 Land-grant Universities.

In 2017 the EDEN Executive and USDA-NIFA sponsored an effort to comprehensively engage 1890 Land-Grant Universities (LGUs) into EDEN and its resources. The major thrust for this effort was the 2017 NIFA Family & Consumer Sciences Visiting Scholar Program. With the support of the 1890 Association of Extension Administrators (AEA), a critical outcome of the visiting scholar activity was the formation of the 1890-EDEN Advisory Group (AG) to provide oversight, and guidance in the process of engaging 1890 LGUs in EDEN. Since formation of the AG, 1890 participation in EDEN has increased tremendously. Sixteen of the nineteen 1890s currently participate on the AG.
In the years between 2017 and 2020, the AG has created a working action plan, conducted face-to-face workshops, collaborated with FEMA to become certified trainers in “Religious and Cultural Literacy and Competency in Disasters,” delivered presentations at conferences, conducted webinars, entered research partnerships with 1862 LGUs and other academic institutions, and acquired funding from the Southern SARE Region Research and Education grant program to investigate the cultural impacts of disasters on limited resource producers. Also, some 1890 institutions have adjusted existing programs to incorporate disaster education. For example, Finis Stribling III and Dr. Henry English at Tennessee State University and the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff respectively, have incorporated disaster education components into their farm academies.
July 2021 saw the AG sponsoring a training for its members on “Surviving Disasters Through Risk Management Preparation and Best Management Practices.” In September 2021, the AG conducted a workshop/training entitled “Religious and Cultural Literacy and Competency in Disasters” for the post-conference session at the EDEN Annual Meeting in Raleigh, NC. The session was a targeted component of a new EDEN Executive initiative to engage wider audiences within 1890 and 1862 service areas with disaster education programming. The training provided attendees with a whole community approach to religious/cultural literacy and competency in disasters.
Finally, the AG is seeking opportunities with EDEN, Federal, non-Federal, and institutional partners to expand by creating a disaster center to more formally address disaster related issues encountered by limited resource audiences.
The 1890-EDEN Project is supported by the USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture and the national EDEN Executive Committee through a contract with the Purdue University.
Call for Webinar Submissions
Online learning opportunities can help Extension professionals learn about disaster resources and programs used by their colleagues, keep up-to-date on federal disaster programs, and assemble a toolbox for building disaster resilient communities. EDEN webinars must address a disaster-related topic in one of Extension’s main program areas: Agriculture, Nature Resources, Community Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, 4-H Youth Development, and Sea Grant. The EDEN Professional Development Committee accepts webinar proposals on a continuous basis. If you have a webinar proposal you would like to submit for review, follow the link above for the submission form.
Webinars should be developed by EDEN, by one of its state-based member Extension programs, or by one of its partners. All slidesets must be submitted to the EDEN Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Cheyanne Geideman (email@example.com), and the EDEN Project Coordinator, Abby Lillpop (firstname.lastname@example.org), at least 24 hours prior to the webinar.
